What does oral glucose do? Provides glucose for cell use.
What are the indications for Oral glucose? Low blood sugar
What are the contraindications for Oral glucose? Do not give to unconscious patients or ones who can not protect their airway.
Side Effects of Oral Glucose? Nausea and vomiting
Route for Oral glucose? Buccal
Dose of Oral glucose? 1/2 tube to 1 tube or 7.5g to 15g
What does Aspirin do? Prevents platelets aggregation
What are the indications of Aspirin? Chest pain of cardiac origin?
What are the contraindications of Aspirin? Known allergy to the medication
Side effects of Aspirin? Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, bleeding, allergic reaction
Route for Aspirin? Orally (chewed)
Dose of Aspirin? 160 mg to 325mg
What does Albuterol do? Binds with Beta 2 receptors in the lungs, causing bronchodilation
What are the indications of Albuterol? Asthma/Dyspnea with wheezing
What are the contraindications of Albuterol? Known allergy to the medication, chest pain of cardiac origin
What are the side effects of Albuterol? Tachycardia, hypertension, anxiety, restlessness
Route for Albuterol? Inhalation
Dose of albuterol? 1 to 2 puffs via MDI or 2.5mg via SVN
What does Naloxone (Narcan) do? Binds to opiate receptors and reverses respiratory depression from an opiate overdose
What are the indications of Naloxone (Narcan)? Respiratory depression from a suspected opiate overdose
What are the contraindications of Naloxone (Narcan)? Known allergy to the medication
What are the side effects of Naloxone (Narcan)? Nausea and vomiting?
Route of Naloxone (Narcan)? Intramuscular (IM) or Intranasal(IN)
Dose of Naloxone (Narcan)? 0.4mg via Intramuscular 2mg via Intranasal
What does epinephrine do? Stimulates sympathetic nervous system which causes bronchodilation, and vasoconstriction
What are the indications of Epinephrine? Anaphlaxis
What are the contraindications of Epinephrine? Chest pain of cardiac origin, hypothermia, and hypertension
What are the side effects of Epinephrine? Tachycardia, hypertension, anxiety, restlessness
Route of Epinephrine? Intramuscular
Dose of Epinephrine? 0.3mg if greater than 30kg of body weight. 0.15mg if less than 30kg of body weight.
What does Activated charcoal do? Binds and absorbs toxic substances in the digestive tract
What are the indications of Activated charcoal? Most oral poisonings/overdose
What are the contraindications of activated charcoal? Decreased level of consciousness, overdose of corrosives, caustics, or petroleum substances.
What are the side effects of activated charcoal? Nausea, vomiting, constipation, black stool
Route of activated charcoal? Oral
Dose of activated charcoal? 1 to 2 g per kg of body weight
What does oxygen do? Reverses hypoxia
What are the indications of oxygen? Hypoxia or suspected hypoxia
What are the contraindications of oxygen? Administer carefully to patients with COPD. Do not use near open flame
What are the side effects of Oxygen? Possible decreased respiratory effort in patients with COPD
Route for oxygen Inhalation
Dose of oxygen? Use O2 delivery devices to administer 24% to 100% oxygen as needed
What does nitroglycerin do? Dilates blood vessels
What are the indications of Nitroglycerin? Chest pain of cardiac origin
What are the contraindications of Nitroglycerin? Hypotension, bradycardia, tachycardia, and the use of erectile dysfunction medication
Side effects of Nitroglycerin? Headache, dizziness, weakness, tachycardia, hypotension
Route of Nitroglycerin? Sublingual (SL)
Dose of Nitroglycerin? 0.4 mg
