Cell organelles
Cell organelles & Functions (Lesson 3 & 4, 1.1 & 1.2 )
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell membrane | A layer that surrounds and protects cells. It controls substances that flow in and out of the cell |
| Cytoplasm | Is a gel like fluid. It contains water, other substances, and all the cell organelles |
| Nucleus | Controls activities in the cell and the cell reproduction. It contains DNA which determines traits that a cell passes on when it reproduces. |
| Mitochondrion | Here the cell produces energy using the process of cellular respiration |
| Ribosomes | These assemble or produce proteins in the cell. Some are attached to the endoplasmic reticulum and some float freely in the cytopasm |
| Endoplasmic Reticulum | Folded membranes that act as channels to transport proteins and other materials through the cytoplasm |
| Golgi body | Receves proteins from the endoplasmic reticulum, sorts them, and packages them into bag like structures called vesicles |
| Vesicles | Membrane covered structures that carry proteins, water, and nutrents around the cell and in and out of the cell |
| Vacuoles | Structures that temporarily store water, other substances, and wastes in the cells. vacuoles in plant cells are usually much larger. |
| Lysosomes | structure that contain chemical like enzymes which break down and recycle worn out organelles |
| Cillia | Tiny hair like structures attached to the body of some cells. They can move together in a wave like fashion and help the cell move around |
| Flagellum | A lash like structure attached to some of the cells, they can whip back and forth to help a cell flow around a liquid |
| Cell wall | A tough layer outside of the cell membrane, it can be rigid which helps a plant cell hold its shape, its also helps protect the cell. (found only in plant cells) |
| Chloroplasts | Carrys out photosynthises (only in plant cells) |
| Prokaryotic | These cells do not have a nucleus, although they do still have DNA. (Bacteria) |
| Eukaryotic | These organisms do have a nuclei in their cells. (Animals, Fungi, Plant |
| Nuclear Pores | gateways in the nuclear envelope, facilitating the passage of mRNA to the cytoplasm for protein synthesis in ribosomes |
| Nuclear envelope | A double membrane that surrounds the nucleus, featuring nuclear pores. |
