Body Systems
| Term | Definition |

| organ | Structure made of 2 or more different tissues which has a specialized function. |
| organism | A self-contained living thing. |
| specialized | Having characteristics that allow specific functions to be performed. |
| subsystem | A self-contained system within a larger system. |
| system | A group of interacting, interrelated, or interdependent elements forming a complex whole. |
| tissue | A mass of similar cells that perform a specialized function. |
| skeletal system | Bones and cartilage (skeleton) that support a vertebrate's body. |
| circulatory system | Organ system that transports needed substances throughout the body and carries away wastes. |
| excretory system | Organ system that removes wastes from the body. (includes the urinary system) |
| digestive system | Organ system that breaks down food into substances the body can use, and absorbs these substances. |
| respiratory system | Organ system that takes oxygen into the body and releases carbon dioxide and water. |
| muscular system | All the muscles of the body, especially those involved in movement. |
| nervous system | System of organs and tissue that controls and coordinates the body's activities. |
