venous thromboembolism (VTE) blood clots in the veins
total hip arthroplasty (THA) hip replacement
total knee arthroplasty (TKA) knee replacement
peptic ulcer disease (PUD) open sores on the lining of the stomach or duodenum
reperfusion arrythmia (RA) an irregular heart rhythm that occurs when blood flow to the heart is restored after a period of blockage or reduced flow
peripheral artery disease (PAD) (shiny skin, absent pulses, lack of sensation) narrowing of arteries which results in reduced blood flow to head, arms, stomach and legs usually affects the arteries in the legs
transient ischemic attack (TIA) a stroke that lasts only a few minutes
supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) rapid heartbeat
patient controlled analgesia (PCA) a patient presses a button for pain medicine when patients need it
drug induced diabetes mellitus (DIDM) diabetes mellitus as a result of taking certain medications (glucocorticoids, immunosuppressants, CV medications)
high flow nasal cannula (HFNC) used when a patient is developing hypoxemic respiratory failure or at high risk of progressing to it
short acting beta agonists (SABA) used for rapid short-term bronchodilation
fetal heart rate (FHR) 110-160 bpm
