Trophics

Notes on trophics in ecology including marine biology.

QuestionAnswer
What is a trophic pyramid? A graph representing trophic levels in an ecosystem.
Why do the levels of energy decrease as the levels of the trophic pyramid go up? Energy is lost as heat in the atmosphere, water, and space.
What is caused do the the lowering energy up a trophic pyramid? Fewer organisms make up levels.
What is a detritus? Dead solid organic matter that many organisms including marine organisms will feed on.
Why are decomposers important? They transfer dead organic material back into the food web to used again.
When decomposers break down dead organic matter, what simpler forms is it turned into? Carbon dioxide, water, and essential nutrients.
What is nutrient regeneration? The process of nutrients and material being transferred back into the food web by decomposers to be used by primary producers again.
What is primary production? The production of carbohydrates by autotrophs.
What is biomass? The sum of renewable organic matter produced by the organisms at each trophic level.
What is gross primary production? The general sum of organic energy created by primary producers.
What is net primary production? The remaining amount of energy left from gross primary production after accounting for the energy consumed for respiration in producers.
What is standing stock? The sum of phytoplankton present in the water at a certain time.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
