QuestionAnswer
What is a tissue? A group of similar cells (and their products) that work together to perform a specific function.
What are the four basic tissue types? Epithelial, Connective, Muscle, Nervous
Which tissue type covers body surfaces and lines cavities? Epithelial tissue
Which tissue type supports, binds, and protects? Connective tissue
Which tissue type is responsible for movement? muscle tissue
Which tissue type conducts electrical impulses? Nervous tissue
List structural characteristics of epithelial tissue. Tightly packed cells, little extracellular matrix, avascular, basement membrane, rapid regeneration
List functions of epithelial tissue. Protection, absorption, secretion, filtration
Where is epithelial tissue found? Skin, lining of organs and cavities, glands
What is the main feature of connective tissue structure? Cells separated by extracellular matrix
List major functions of connective tissue. Support, protection, binding, transport
Name examples of connective tissue. Bone, cartilage, blood, adipose, tendons, ligaments
: What is the main characteristic of muscle tissue? ability to contract
What are the three types of muscle tissue? Skeletal, cardiac, smooth
Which muscle tissue is voluntary? skeletal muscle
Which muscle tissue is involuntary and found in organs? smooth muscle
What is the main function of nervous tissue? Communication and control through electrical signals
Where is nervous tissue found? Brain, spinal cord, nerves
What is an exocrine gland? A gland that secretes through ducts onto body surfaces
What is an endocrine gland? A ductless gland that secretes hormones into the bloodstream
Difference between unicellular and multicellular glands? Unicellular = one cell; Multicellular = many cells
Example of a unicellular gland. Goblet cell
What is an epithelial membrane made of? Epithelial tissue + connective tissue
Function of serous membranes? Reduce friction between organs
What is the cutaneous membrane? skin
What are the three steps of tissue repair? Inflammation, organization, regeneration/fibrosis
Which tissue heals the fastest? Epithelial tissue
Which tissue heals the slowest? nervous tissue
How does epithelial tissue differ from connective tissue? Epithelial has tightly packed cells with little matrix and covers surfaces; connective tissue has widely spaced cells with extracellular matrix and supports/binds.
How does muscle tissue differ from nervous tissue? Muscle tissue contracts to produce movement; nervous tissue transmits electrical signals for communication.
Which tissue types are avascular vs vascular? Epithelial is avascular; connective tissue is usually vascular (exceptions: cartilage, tendons, ligaments).
Which tissue types regenerate quickly vs poorly? Epithelial regenerates quickly; nervous tissue regenerates poorly.
Which tissue type has the most extracellular matrix? connective tissue
What are the four main types of membranes? Mucous, serous, cutaneous, synovial.
What type of membrane lines body cavities open to the exterior? mucous membranes
Where are serous membranes found? Closed body cavities (thoracic, abdominal) and cover organs.
What is the function of mucous membranes? Protection, secretion, and absorption.
What makes the cutaneous membrane unique? It is dry and consists of the skin.
What is a synovial membrane and its function? Lines joint cavities and secretes synovial fluid to reduce friction.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
