Weather Systems

Mid-Latitude weather Systems and basic weather definitions

TermDefinition
Pressure Gradient Aloft is: The change in air pressure between two points high in the atmosphere.
Temperature Gradient is: A slope that describes how temperature changes over a specific distance.
Jet stream pattern (1): The Zonal pattern blows from West to East and moves in a straight pathway, keeping the weather moving fast and mild.
Steady-State low pressure is: When a low-pressure system maintains itself for a long period of time, with constant cloudiness and rainfalls.
Steady-state high pressure is: When a high-pressure system maintains itself for a long period of with, with constant clear skies and stable weather.
Upper-level disturbance is: When a small shortwave / ripple of pocket energy forces air upwards, causing a "disturbance."
Temperature Advection is: The horizontal movement of temperature by wind.
Stationary Front is: When two air masses are next to each other and not moving.
Cold Front is: When the cold air mass moves first, pushing against the warm air, which forces the warm air to move up.
Warm Front is: When the warm air moves first, sliding up and over the cold air.
Occluded Fronts is: When the fast-moving cold air cuts through, lifting the entire slow warm air off the surface and meets another cold air on the other side.
Warm Conveyor belt is: When a moist and warm stream of air goes up and over the cold air, creating precipitation, clouds, and rainfalls.
Dry Conveyor belt is: When a very cold and dry air follows behind a cold front and clears areas in the clouds.
Cold Conveyor belt is: When a cold and dry air near the surface arises ahead of the storm, centers the low pressure system, wraps around the storm and creates the heaviest snow.
What are Jet streams? Jet streams are high-altitude river of air that is caused by a massive temperature gradient.
A Front is: When two air masses meet and typically the dry, dense air will remain at the surface and the warm, humid air will rise.
Instability (Fronts): Refers to a life or rise in the air (either air mass), creating a low pressure system.
Mid-Latitude Cyclones is: A large-scale, low-pressure system swirling cold air and warm air together.
Jet Stream Pattern (2): The Meridional pattern is a winding mountain road (S line) that moves North to South, and causes big temperature clashes and giant storms.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
