7.13 Science Vocabulary

| organ | two or more tissues that work together to perform a special function |
| organ system | a group of organs that work together to perform body functions |
| tissue | a group of similar cells that perform a common function |
| cell | the simplest and most basic unit of all living things |
| organism | a living thing; anything that can carry out life processes independently |
| system | a set of interacting parts that work together; sometimes considered distinct from their surroundings only for the purpose of study |
| proportion | relationships between quantities, using ratios |
| quantity | the amount or number of something |
| skeletal system | the organ system whose primary function is to support and protect the body and to allow the body to move |
| muscular system | the body system made of the skeletal muscles that move the body |
| nervous system | the body system that gathers and interprets information about the body's internal and external environments and that responds to that information |
| model | a physical or conceptual representation of a system or phenomenon |
| circulatory system | the heart and vessels that move blood through the body |
| digestive system | the organs that break down food so that it can be used by the body |
| respiratory system | a collection of organs whose primary function is to take in oxygen and expel carbon dioxide; the organs of this system include the lungs, the throat, and the passageways that lead to the lungs |
| urinary system | the organs that make, store, and eliminate urine |
| enzyme | a protein or other type of molecule that helps chemical processes happen in living things |
| endocrine system | a network of tissues and organs that release chemicals that control certain body functions |
| hormone | a substance that is made in one cell or tissue and that causes a change in another cell or tissue in a different part of the body |
| immune system | the cells and tissues that recognize and attack foreign substances in the body |
| integumentary system | the organ system that forms a protective covering on the outside of the body |
| reproductive system | the system of organs and parts which function to produce human offspring |
| pathogen | a microorganism or other organism, a virus, or a protein that causes disease |
