Benzodiazepines MOA CNS depressant. Enhances the effect of GABA. Slows neuronal firing. makes neuron less response to excitatory neurotransmitter norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine.
Benzodiazepines Treatment anxiety, insomnia, alcohol withdrawal, skeletal muscle relaxation, acute management of seizures, severe agitation, social fobias, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder.
Benzodiazepines Target Symptoms Nervousness, sweating, increased HR, sense of dread, fearfulness, phobias, compulsiveness, nausea, vomitting, diarrhea, dizziness, irratibility, headache, and dry mouth.
propranolol (Inderal) Betablocker (non-benzo agent)
Betablocker MOA blocks stimulation of beta (myocardial) and beta2 (pulmonary, vascular, and uterine) adrenergic receptor sites.
Betablocker treatment decrease anxiety symptoms, decrease HR, social phobias, fearful situations (performance anxiety).
buspirone (Buspar) Antiaxiety (non-benzo)
Buspar MOA Binds to serotonin and dopamine recpetor sites in the brain. Increases metabolism of norepinephrine in the brain.
Buspar Treatment Relief of anxiety. Onset 7-10 days. !Non Sedating, doesn't cause euphoria, no abuse potiential!
SSRI Used to treat OCD and Depression.
hydoroxyzine hydrochloride (Atarax) Antihistamine; sedative effect decreases S&S of anxiety
hydroxyzine pamoate (Vistaril) Antihistamine; used for sedative effect; decreases S$S of anxiety
Anticonvulsants give a sedative effect for those with anxiety
