QuestionAnswer
Mid-Ocean Ridge An undersea mountain chain where new ocean floor is produced.
Sonar A device that determines the distance of an object under water by recording the echoes of sound waves.
Sea-Floor Spreading The process by which molten material adds new oceanic crust to the ocean floor.
Deep-Ocean Trench A deep valley along the ocean floor beneath which oceanic crust slowly sinks toward the mantle.
Subduction The process by which oceanic crust sinks beneath a deep-ocean trench and back into the mantle at a convergent plate boundary.
What device is used to map the ocean floor? Sonar.
How does new oceanic crust form? It forms when lava is erupted onto to the sea floor.
Why does the rock of the ocean floor have a pattern of magnetic stripes? As rock cooled, it became magnetized parallel to the magnetic field that existed at that time. Through time, sea-floor spreading caused the striped pattern on both sides of the ridge.
