energy 8F sci test

I hate science tests :(

QuestionAnswer
law of conservation of energy? energy transferred from one type to another or one place to another but total amount stays the same
ke equation/components? mass x velocity^2 / 2
gpe equation? weight x height
what is gpe? potential energy that depends on height and weight
example of gpe? waterfall
how do potential energy (pe) and kinetic energy (ke) change into each other and back again? pe when object is in a sort of resting state (the word potential sums it up), more ke is more movement (think back to the examples shown in class)
where does all energy ultimately come from? the sun
what is mechanical energy and an example? matter in motion has energy, kinetic energy + potential energy. example is walking
what is heat energy and an example? thermal motion of atoms (the fast they move, the more heat there is). usually results from friction. causes change in temperature and phases of matter. example is rubbing a slipper on a fuzzy carpet.
what is chemical energy and an example? the energy required to bond atoms together, when bonds break, energy is released. energy stored in muscles. ex. digesting food.
what is electromagnetic energy and an example? moving electric charges. spectrum; ROYGBIV. example is x-rays
what is nuclear energy and an example? made from atoms splitting apart. ____ fission. example is SSNs (___ powered submarines) moving.
a car functions, and the energy process is chemical --> heat --> mechanical. why/how does this happen to the energy? chem nrg stored in bonds of the fuel, the bonds break, reform into new molecules, result has lower chem nrg than the reactants, difference is released as heat energy. thermal expansion turns chaotic motion of gas -> ordered mechanical work (mech nrg)
how is energy involved in all of the sciences and how does it connect everything? fundamental quantity behind motion, forces, fields. drives chemical reactions. life runs on energy flow. planet systems (weather, climate, etc.) are energy driven. energy shaped the universe ("big bang")
what is happening to the molecules in the 5 different forms of energy? there are kinetic forms (particles/photons/electrons are moving) and potential forms (particles positioned so they could move due to forces, or bonds could break and re-form). nuclear, gpe, chemical are potential. heat, electromagnetic are kinetic.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
