The study of waves and their properties

| sound wave | a mechanical, longitudinal pressure wave that transmits energy through a medium (solid, liquid, or gas) by causing particles to vibrate parallel to the direction of wave motion |
| wave | a disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another without transferring matter. |

| medium | a material in which a wave travels. |
| transverse wave | a wave in which the disturbance is perpendicular to the direction the wave travels. |
| longitudinal wave | a wave in which the disturbance is parallel to the direction the wave travels. |
| amplitude | the maximum extent of the repeating quantity from equilibrium |
| wavelength | the distance between one point on a wave and the nearest point just like it |
| frequency | the number of times the pattern repeats in a given amount of time. |
| pitch | the perception of how high or low a sound seems is pitch. |
