Earth's Atmosphere

Atmosphere A layer of gases that surrounds Earth that protects it from the full radiation from the sun
Altitude Height above sea level or the earth's surface
Troposphere The lowest layer of the atmosphere. Where weather occurs!
Stratosphere Second layer of the atmosphere. Ozone Layer found here
Ozone Layer An invisible shield of oxygen gas found in the stratosphere. It protects life by absorbing the sun's dangerous UV rays
Mesosphere Third layer of the atmosphere. Layer where meteors burn.
Thermosphere 4th layer of Earth's atmosphere. Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) occur here
Exosphere The uppermost region of Earth's atmosphere as it gradually fades into the of space. Air here is extremely thin
Reflection Light colors do this with with incoming radiation from the sun
Absorption Dark colors do this with with incoming radiation from the sun
Earth's Energy Balance The balance between the energy lost by Earth into space and the energy gained by solar radiation trapped by Earth's atmosphere
The Sun The primary source of all energy on earth
Nitrogen The most abundant gas in the atmosphere
Oxygen The second most abundant has in the atmosphere
Temperature Increase This occurs when Earth gives off LESS energy than we receive
Temperature Decrease This occurs when Earth gives off MORE energy than we receive
