Chemistry Unit 6
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Overview | A change in composition. At least a new product formed. atoms are rearranged |
| Law of conservation | Mass cannot be created or destroyed; it is rearranged |
| Word/ Chemical Equation | Reactant (left) > products (right) |
| Balancing Equations | The number of atoms of each element must be equal on both sides of the equation |
| Rules for Balancing Equations | 1.Determine the formula for reactants and products. 2.Write formulas for reactants on left and products on the right 3. "take inventory "of each element of reactants and products. Balance elements one at a time using coefficient |
| Coefficient | Whole number in front of formula the subscripts can't be changed. |
| States of matter | (s)=solid (l)=liquid (g)=gas (aq)= aqueous= dissolved in water |
| Synthesis/Combination Reaction | 2 or more reactants combine to form 1 product that is a compound |
| Decomposition | Single compound is broken down into 2 or more products |
| Combustion Reaction | Element or compound (usually a hydrocarbon reacts with oxygen gas (O2). Complete combustion yields CO2 and H2O |
| Hydrocarbon | A molecule made up of hydrogen carbon. |
| Common Hydrocarbons | Propane (C3H8), Methane (CH4) Butane (C4H10) |
| Single Replacement Reaction | Usually ionic compound and element. Atoms of 1 stronger element replace those of another in a compound. Check Table J |
| Double Replacement Reaction | Exchange of ions between 2 ionic compounds often in aqueous solution. product must be a molecular liquid, gas or precipitate |
