Chapter 13 Define

Important words from chapter 13 and their definitions.

QuestionAnswer
BIOSPHERE It is the regions of the Earth occupied by living organisms, made up of all the ecozones.
OZONE The ozone layer is a thin layer of ozone in the atmosphere 15 to 30 kilometres above Earth; the ozone layer filters the sun’s UV rays.
CFCs CFC (Chlorofluorocarbons) are chemicals used in coolants, solvents, and aerosol cans that damage the ozone layer.
OZONE LAYER DEPLETION When the ozone and the CFCs interact, the ozone layer is broken down so less UV radiation is filtered out. This causes an increase in diseases in the environment.
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT Is a way to maintain economic growth without damaging the environment.
GLOBAL WARMING Is the observed and projected increase in the Earth’s average temperature due to burning of fossil fuels and deforestation.
RACHEL CARSON In 1962 Rachel Carson published Silent Spring. This was a book about the use of pesticides and how they were harmful to the environment (especially the birds). It was the first book about being aware of the environment and what effects we have on it.
GREENPEACE It was first established in 1971 by British Columbian activists. The group in is non-governmental and it aims to fight any injustice done to the environment.
UNEP It stands for United Nations Environment Programme. Their goals are to make the world more environmentally friendly.
BRUNDTLAND REPORT Also known as Our Common Future. Published in 1987 by the UN. It put importance on the environment and made it high on the UN’s agenda for change. It displays many ways in which to continue both environmental protection and economic growth.
EARTH SUMMIT IN RIO - 1992 Was a meeting of the world leaders, to discuss environmental changes and sustainable development. The UN planned to keep greenhouse gas concentrations from rising.
KYOTO PROTOCOL - 1997 It is a document that contains a list of countries that committed to cut their CO2 emissions by 6% from the 1990 rate before 2012. This was not accomplished by Canada so it will be re-assessed and re-evaluated.
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION ACT - CANADA, 2000 This act is to regulate the pollutants that are distributed into our atmosphere as to protect the environment and human health. This is believed to help in the goal of achieving sustainable development.
UN CLIMATE CHANGE CONFERENCE - COPENHAGEN - 2009 It was a meeting with all of the countries of the UN. It focused specifically on climate change and sustainability.
EFFECTS OF DEFORESTATION Deforestation is the process of destroying a forest and replacing it with something else. This is bad for the environment because it destroys a natural habitat, stops trees from producing oxygen, and it can aid in the spread of deserts. When trees die
