City and Guilds 101 Wall terms
| Term | Definition |

| Partition Walls | Internal walls used to divide a building's space into individual rooms or areas. |
| Stud | A vertical timber or metal member of a partition wall fixed between the sole plate and head plate; it provides the main fixing point for covering materials. |
| Sole Plate (or Head Plate) | A horizontal timber fixed at the bottom (sole) or top (head) of studs to provide a fixing point and distribute loads evenl |
| Noggin | A short horizontal piece fixed between vertical studs to stiffen them and provide extra fixing points for covering materials or heavy items like sinks |
| Skew Nailed | A technique where nails are driven in at an angle to join two pieces of timber, such as fixing a stud to a plate |
| Plasterboard | The standard covering material for partition walls, consisting of a plaster core wrapped in paper |
| Load-Bearing | A wall designed to support the weight of structural members above it, such as floor or ceiling joists. |
| Airbrick | A perforated brick below the Damp Proof Course designed to let air circulate under suspended timber floors |
| Stretcher Bond | A brick bond used in cavity wall construction - every brick is laid lengthways so the "stretcher" face is visible |
| Damp proof course | A thick strip of plastic bedded into the mortar between brick courses to stop damp rising from the ground. Must be no lower than 150mm above ground level |
| Cavity Wall Construction | A wall built with two skins of brick or blockwork tied together with wall ties. Designed to prevent moisture penetrating the inner leaf from the outer |
| Lintel | Generally made from Concrete or Steel and used above doors and windows etc to carry the weight of the building above |
| Gauge Box | An open ended box designed to help accurately measure quantities of cement, sand etc for mortar or concrete |
| Plumb | A term meaning perfectly vertical. Partition walls must be "plumb" to ensure doors fit correctly and the structure is stable |
