Fletcher-Solar System Review
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Solar System | consists of the sun, planets, their moons, meteors, asteroids, and comets |
| Milky Way Galaxy | the galaxy in which our solar system is located |
| Gravity | the force that pulls two objects together; it pulls us toward Earth and it keeps the planets in motion around the sun |
| Astronomy | the study of the moon, stars, and other objects in space |
| Axis | an imaginary line that passes through a planet's center and the North and South poles, about which the planet rotates |
| Rotation | the spinning motion of a planet about its axis |
| Revolution | the movement of an object around another object (planets revolve around the sun; moon(s) revolve around their planets) |
| Orbit | the path of an object as it revolves around another object in space |
| Gravity | the attractive force between two objects; its magnitude depends on their masses and the distance between them |
| satellite | any object that revolves around another object |
| Crater | a round pit on the moon's surface |
| Core | the central part of the sun, where nuclear fusion occurs |
| Comet(dirty snowball) | a ball of ice and dust whose orbit is usually a long; it has a "glowing tail" up to 100 million miles long |
| Asteroids(minor planets or planetoids) | objects revolving around the sun that are too small and too numerous to be considered planets |
| Asteroid Belt | the region of the solar system between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, where many asteroids are found |
| Meteoroid | a chunk of rock or dust in space |
| Meteor(shooting star) | a strike of light in the sky produced by the burning of a meteoroid in Earth's atmosphere |
| Meteorite | a meteoroid that has hit Earth's surface |
| Space Station | a man-made laboratory orbiting the Earth |
| Mercury | Planet with the quickest orbit |
| Uranus | Planet that rotates on its side |
| Gas Giants | The 4 largest planets located outside the asteroid belt |
| Titan | a moon of Jupiter that has an atmosphere |
| Mars | due to it's Rusty surface this planet is also known as the red planet |
| Neptune | The planet that takes the greatest amount of time to orbit the Sun |
| Red | The color of the coolest stars |
| Blue | The color of the hottest stars |
| Yellow | The color of our Sun |
| Super giant | The largest type of Stars |
| Main Sequence | Our sun is this type of star |
