| aquifer | a body of rock or sediment that stores groundwater and allows the flow of groundwater |
| groundwater | the water that is beneath Earth's surface |
| surface water | all the bodies of fresh water, salt water, ice and snow that are found above the ground |
| watershed | the area of land that is drained by a river system |
| wetland | an area of land that is periodically underwater or whose soil contains a great deal of moisture |
| conservation | the protection and wise use of resources and the natural world |
| natural resource | natural material or energy source that supports life or is useful to people |
| nonrenewable resource | resource that forms at a rate that is much slower than the rate at which it is consumed |
| renewable resource | resource that can be replaced at the same rate at which it is consumed |
| resource management | sustainable use of natural resources by people |
| nonpoint-source pollution | pollution that comes from many sources rather than from a specific site, such as fertilizer runoff from farms or residential yards |
| point-source pollution | pollution that comes from a specific location, such as a sewer pipe emptying waste into a river |
| hydrosphere | includes oceans and all the other water on the planet including the atmosphere |
| pollution | substance that enters the environment and can harm living things |
| dependence | a reliance on something else |
| impact | an effect of one thing on another |
