Patterns of the Sky

| axis | an imaginary line through Earth from the North Pole to the South Pole; the Earth rotates on this |
| day/night cycle | the repeating pattern of day and night that occurs every 24 hours caused by Earth's rotation |
| rotate | to spin on an axis: 24 hour period causing day/night cycle |
| Sun | the star closest to Earth |
| apparent motion | when an object in space seems to move even though it is Earth that is moving |
| shadow | a dark shape that is made when a source of light is blocked |
| 24 hours | amount of hours it takes the Earth to complete one day and night cycle |
| early morning | long shadows that point to the west |
| 12:00 noon | short shadows |
| late afternoon | long shadows that point to the east |
| night | no shadows |
| lunar phases | cycle of the moon shapes which we see from the earth |
| apparent movement | Earth’s rotation during the day gives the false appearance of the Sun moving from East to the West across the sky |
| weather | the day to day changes of the atmospheric conditions in a certain area |
| climate | the usual or predictable atmospheric conditions in a certain area averaged over a long period of time |
| moon | natural satellite of the earth |
