Science Test 1/30

QuestionAnswer
What is matter? Very tiny particles that are constantly in motion.
What are chemical forces? the forces of attraction among particles
What is an element? An element is a substance that can not be broken down. ONE type of atom.
On what chart can I locate ALL elements? The Periodic Table of Elements
What is a compound? A compound is 2 or more elements that are chemically combined.
What is the difference between a chemical symbol and a chemical formula? A chemical symbol is one or two letters that represent an element. A chemical formula represents a compound.
How many atoms does a molecule of water have? 3 total. 2 hydrogen and 1 oxygen.
How many atoms does a molecule of sugar have? 45 in total. 12 carbon, 22 hydrogen, 11 oxygen.
Which direction does heat travel? Heat travels from hot to cold.
Why does your hand feel cold if there is an ice cube in it? The heat is being removed from your hand and added to the ice.
What are the 3 states of matter? Solid, liquid, gas.
Does a solid have a definite shape and volume? Yes = shape Yes = volume
Does a liquid have a definite shape and volume? No = shape Yes = volume
Does a gas have a definite shape and volume? No = shape No = volume
Describe the movement and attraction of the particles of a solid? The attraction is very close and the particles vibrate.
Describe the movement and attraction of the particles of a liquid? The attraction is not too close and not too far apart and the particles vibrate while moving slightly around.
Describe the movement and attraction of the particles of a gas? The attraction is very far apart and the particles are vibrating and moving all around.
What is the phase change from a solid to a liquid called? Melting
What is the phase change from a liquid to a solid called? Freezing
What is the phase change from a liquid to a gas called? Evaporating
What is the phase change from a gas to a liquid called? Condensation
Why do things get cold? Heat is removed. We do not add cold, we only remove heat.
What is a physical property or physical change? You can use your senses to observe physical properties or changes. A phase change is a physical change.
Give an example of a physical property or change? Melting, freezing, evaporating, color, density, shape, smell or odor.
What is a chemical property or chemical change? When the substance has changed.
Give an example of a chemical property or change? Burning, rusting, oxidizing.
Why does your hand feel warm when holding a hot muffin? The muffin is warmer than your hand so the heat goes from the muffin to your hand.
What is kinetic energy? Energy of motion or movement. Atoms and particles are always moving.
What happens to kinetic energy when heat is added? The kinetic energy increases and the particles move faster.
Are we adding or removing heat energy when something goes from hot to cold? We are removing heat energy.
What happens to the energy when something goes from cold to hot? We are adding heat energy.
