Properties of Water
Science 6
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| polar molecule | A molecule with electrically charged areas. Electrons are NOT SHARED EVENLY. |
| nonpolar molecule | A molecule that has evenly distributed or shared electric charges |
| surface Tension | the tightness across the surface of water caused by polar molecules pulling on each other |
| capillary action | The force of attraction among water molecules AND with molecules of surrounding materials (causes water to stick to the sides of a glass) |
| cohesion | water sticking to other water molecules |
| adhesion | water molecules sticking to other polar substances |
| water cycle | when water moves through bodies of water, land, and living things |
| evaporation | liquid water turning to water vapor |
| precipitation | water returning to earth from the clouds in the form of rain, sleet, snow, etc |
| condensation | water vapor changes to liquid water |
| transpiration | process of water given off through the leaves of plants as water vapor |
| solution | a type of mixture in which one substance is dissolved by another (ex: sugar dissolved in koolaid) |
| solvent | part of the solution that does the dissolving |
| solute | the part of a solution being dissolved |
| temperature | the average amount of energy of motion in each molecule (higher energy means hotter objects) |
