Ecosystems and Population Change
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| ecosystem | A community of living organisms and the nonliving factors in an area that interact with one another. |
| food web | A model that shows how energy is transferred through feeding relationships among organisms in an ecosystem. |
| energy transfer | The movement of energy from one organism to another through eating and feeding relationships. |
| producer | An organism, such as a plant or algae, that makes its own food using sunlight through photosynthesis. |
| consumer | An organism that gets energy by eating other organisms. |
| decomposer | An organism, such as bacteria or fungi, that breaks down dead organisms and waste, returning nutrients to the ecosystem. |
| population | A group of organisms of the same species living in the same area at the same time. |
| biodiversity | The number and variety of different species in an area, including genetic, species, and ecosystem diversity. |
| genetic diversity | Differences in genetic information among individuals of the same species that allow populations to adapt and survive. |
| species diversity | The number and variety of different species within an ecosystem. |
| ecosystem diversity | The variety of different ecosystems found in a region or on Earth. |
| keystone species | A species that has a large impact on the stability of an ecosystem because many other organisms depend on it. |
| invasive species | A non-native species that spreads rapidly and disrupts food webs by competing with native species. |
| native species | A species that naturally lives and evolves in a particular ecosystem. |
| natural disaster | A natural event, such as a wildfire, hurricane, flood, or volcanic eruption, that disrupts an ecosystem. |
| human intervention | Human actions that affect ecosystems, either positively or negatively, by changing populations or habitats. |
| primary succession | The series of changes that occurs in an area with no soil or life, beginning with bare rock. |
| secondary succession | The series of changes that occurs in an area where soil remains after a disturbance. |
| pioneer species | The first organisms to colonize an area during succession, helping create soil and conditions for other species. |
| climax community | A stable, mature ecosystem with a balance of organisms that results after succession is complete. |
