Weather The day to day state of the atmosphere in a specific place at a specific time.
Temperature How hot or cold the atmosphere is
Precipitation any form of water that falls from the sky (rain, snow, sleet, hail)
wind the movement of air from high pressure to low pressure are
humidity the amount of moisture in the air
air pressure the force exerted by the weight of the air above
cloud cover the amount and type of clouds in the sky
climate the long term average of weather patterns in a particular area over an extended period (usually 30 years or more)
seasons regular changes in weather conditions throughout the year
solar radiation the average amount of sunlight reaching Earth's surface
tropical climate zone warm, with high rainfall, little seasonal changes
arid climate zone hot and dry with very little precipitation
temperate climate zone moderate temperatures with distinct seasons
polar climate zone cold, with ling winters and short summers
meteorologist a person who studies weather patterns in order to give us information about the day to day weather
thermometer measure the air temperature
hygrometer measures humidity (water vapor in the air)
barometer measures air pressure
anemometer measures wind speed
wind vane measures wind direction
Rain gauge measures the amount of precipitation
Pressure systems areas of different pressure cause changes in weather
high pressure systems air sinks down slowly and circulates clockwise; dry clear weather
low pressure systems air rises and cools; circulates counter clockwise; cloudy and rainy weather
cold front blue triangle pattern; brings clouds and heavy rain
warm front red half circle pattern; humid air and light rain, scattered clouds
stationary front blue triangle and red circle pattern facing opposite directions; rain, snow, fog and clouds
occluded front triangles and half circle pattern facing same direction; brings rain and snow
Dew Point Temperature at which water droplets condense (helps form clouds)
prefix iso separated
therm heat
thunderstorm powerful short lasting storm with strong winds, heavy rain, thunder, lightning, and sometimes hail
Tornado a destructive spinning funnel of air that has very high wind speeds
Hurricane a tropical low pressure system with very high speeds of wind; the center is called the eye
