What are the 4 main tissue types? 1. Epithelial—protection 2. Connective—support 3. Nervous tissue—control 4. Muscle—movement
Where does Epithelial tissue cover? covers both inside and outside body surfaces
Does epithelial tissue have blood supply? No, has NO vascular tissue
How are epithelial tissue cells packed? packed tightly together
How much weight does your skin count for? 15% of your body weight
What is epithelial tissue the main tissue for? glands
What are the functions of Epithelial tissue? absorption -digestive tract Secretion-specialty of glands Protection-skin Filtration- kidneys
tight junctions when adjacent plasma membranes fuse together like a zipper
desmosomes anchoring junctions that prevent cells subjected to mechanical stress from being pulled apart
gap junctions allow communication b/w cells
specialized contacts form a continuous sheet bound to adjacent cells by lateral contacts
squamous epithelium flattened & scalelike
cuboidal epithelium cube-shaped (as tall as they are wide)
columnar epithelium column-like (tall & column shaped)
simple epithelial tissue one layer (absorption & filtration)
stratified epithelial tissue more than one layer stacked on top of the other (for protection: skin surface & lining of mouth)
