| ecological succession | a gradual process of change and replacement in a community |
| primary succession | change over time in a community in an area that previously did not support life |
| secondary succession | change over time as a community replaces another that has been partially or totally destroyed, but the soil and other supports for life remain |
| species diversity | an index that combines the number and relative abundance of different species in a community |
| competition | ecological relationship in which two or more organisms depend on the same limited resource |
| ecosystem | a community of organisms of the same species that live in the same geographic area |
| population | a group of organisms of the same species that live in the same geographic area |
| biodiversity | the number and variety of organisms in a given area during a specific period of time |
| disturbance | in ecology, an event that changes a community by removing or destroying organisms or by altering resource availability |
| genetic diversity | the amount of variation in the genetic material within all members of a population |
| sustainability | the condition in which human needs are met in such a way that a human population can survive indefinitely |
| stability | the tendency of a community to maintain a relatively constant structure |
| food web | a diagram that shows the feeding relationship between organisms in an ecosystem |
| organism | a living thing; anything that can carry out life processes independently |
| interdependence | a state where two or more organisms are dependent on each other |
