Weather Review

Review for weather test

QuestionAnswer
Describe air pressure it pushes on all parts of our body or other items, it is 14.7 pounds,
What is density it is related to weather by warm air and cold air. More dense air sinks, less dense air rises.
What is the main source of all energy on earth the sun
Explain pressure with the crushed can and the egg in the bottle the molecules inside the can and the bottle were equal to that outside the can. When the molecules are heated up, some leave the can or bottle because they spread out. When the molecules are cooled rapidly and no molecules are allowed to enter the can
Why does air pressure decrease as you climb higher up a mountain? The amount of oxygen and nitrogen is the same at the top of the mountain as it is at the base. There is more space for the molecules to move around, at the top of the mountain than at the bottom of the mountain.
How do molecules behave when they are hot? The move around very rapidly and spread apart.
How do molecules behave when they are cold? They move very slowly and come together, taking up less space.
What layer of the atmosphere do we find weather in? The troposphere
What are the main components of the atmosphere? Oxygen and Nitrogen
What are the three types of heat transfer? Conduction Radiation, Convection
Describe Radiation gives off heat, heat is radiated away from the object
Describe conduction heat is transferred by contact, objects must be touching each other
Describe convection heat travels in a circular pattern were warm air rises and cold air falls.
What is wind? The movement of air caused by the uneven heating of the earth’s surfaces.
How does wind move? It flows in convection patterns.
Air with a greater density is cold and falls.
Air with less density is warm and rises.
Describe a land breeze occurs at night when the land cools more quickly than the water. The air above the water rises and the land air moves in a takes its place.
Describe a sea breeze Occurs during the day when the land heats up quicker than the water and the air rises. The air from the water moves in to take it place.
What are the three types of fronts we are studying? Cold, Warm, Stationary
What type of weather come with a cold front cooler temps, windy, thunderstorms or snow
What type of weather come with a warm front? warm temps, rain or snow, What type of weather come with a stationary front?
Describe a Cold front the cold air moves in causing the warm air to rise. They move in opposite direction toward each other.
Describe a Warm front the warm air pushes the cold air in the same direction building a lot of clouds in the process.
Describe a Stationary Front a cold front and warm front of equal strength pushing against each other.
What is the symbol for a cold front? What direction does it move?
What is the symbol for a warm front? What direction does it move?
What role do ocean currents play in our weather? Ocean current bring warmer weather or colder weather to a country depending upon the type of current it is.
Describe the Gulf Stream Ocean current a warm current that carries water from the Equator up the east coast of the United Stated.
Describe the North Atlantic Ocean current a warm water current that continues north along the course of northwestern Europe.
Describe the California Ocean current carries cold water from the northern Pacific south down the west coast of North America.
Describe the Peru Ocean current located on the western coast of South America is a cold water current that carries water up along the west coast of South America back towards the equator.
