Earth's Changes

Sedimentary Rock, Landforms, Natural Resources

QuestionAnswer
Cementation natural GLUE where tiny bits of rock, sand, and mud (sediments) get stuck together to form solid rock, like sandstone, when dissolved minerals in water crystallize and fill the spaces between the grains, acting as a natural cement to bind them
Compaction happens when sediments are deeply BURIED, placing them under PRESSURE because of the weight of overlying layers
Weathering the breaking down of rock into smaller pieces called sediment
Erosion the movement of sediment from one place to another
Deposition dropping off of sediment in a new location
Fossil Fuel nonrenewable energy resources found deep in the Earth's crust between layers of sedimentary rock; oil, natural gas, and coal
Coal solid nonrenewable fuel source found in sedimentary rock; formed from the remains of ANCIENT PLANTS in SWAMPY regions
Oil (Petroleum) and Natural Gas nonrenewable fuel sources found in sedimentary rock; formed from the remains of MICROORGANISMS found in ANCIENT SEAS
Sediments tiny bits of dirt, sand, pebbles, shells, and even dead plants or animals that get carried by wind, water, or ice
Sedimentary Rocks like Earth's layered sandwiches, made from tiny bits of old rocks, shells, and plants (called sediments) that get squeezed and stuck together over millions of years; often where fossils are found
Sand Dune a large hill of sand formed by wind deposition
U-Shaped Valley a wide, flat valley that was formed by slow moving glaciers that scraped and carved by weathering and eroding the rock into a U shape
Delta a triangular fan of land that forms when a river carrying sand, mud, and rocks (called sediment) slows down and drops (deposition) it all at its mouth where it meets a bigger, calmer body of water like an ocean or lake
V-Shaped Canyon a deep valley with steep sides, shaped like a V, carved into the Earth's surface by river weathering and erosion
Frost Wedging when water gets into tiny cracks in rocks, freezes, and expands like a wedge, pushing the rock apart until it breaks
Glacier large masses of frozen ice that move slowly downhill; as glaciers move, they wear away the surrounding land through erosion
Landform a natural shape on the Earth's surface, like mountains, hills, valleys, or plains, formed by natural forces like water, wind, and ice wearing away or building up the land
Biofuel a special kind of fuel made from plants, animal waste, or other living things (like corn, sugarcane, algae, or even used cooking oil)
Conservation the protection of things found in nature; preserve natural resources so they will still be around in the future
Nonrenewable materials from nature that CANNOT be replaced because they take millions of years to replenish - oil, natural gas and coal
Pollution making the Earth, air, water, or land dirty and unhealthy with harmful things like trash, chemicals, or smoke, which can make people, animals, and plants sick
Recycle taking used items like paper, plastic, and glass, and turning them into new products instead of just throwing them away as trash
Reduce to make something smaller or use less, resulting in a smaller amount of waste (trash)
Renewable Materials from nature that are replaced very quickly - for example: air, plants, animals, sunlight, and water
Replenish to make complete or full again; refill
Reuse using something more than once or finding a new way to use it instead of throwing it away
Resource anything useful that helps people get what they need or want, like things from nature (water, trees)
Agents of Change Wind, water, and ice
Earthquake the sudden shaking of the Earth's surface caused by a rapid release of energy in the planet's crust because giant puzzle pieces called tectonic plates beneath our feet shift, bump, or slide against each other
Erupt to burst out suddenly and powerfully, like a volcano shooting out lava
Flood when a huge amount of water overflows and covers land that's usually dry, like streets or yards
Landslide when a big chunk of earth, rocks, mud, and trees slides down a hill or mountain; gravity pulls everything down; usually triggered by heavy rain making the ground too heavy
Magma super hot, melted rock found deep underground
Lava super hot, melted rock that comes out of a volcano when it erupts
Volcano a mountain with a hole that lets out hot, melted rock (lava), ash, and gas from deep inside the Earth when it erupts
Rapid Changes to the Earth Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides
Slow Changes to the Earth Weathering, erosion, and deposition
Natural Resources Anything from nature that we can use to improve our lives
