| Compositional Layers | Earth’s layers classified based off of what they are made of. |
| Mechanical Layers | Earth’s layers classified based on how rigid, brittle, or viscous they are. |
| Crust | The outermost layer of the Earth that is made of minerals. The tectonic plates are a part of this layer. |
| Mantle | Layer located below the crust that is made of partially molten rock. Magma that erupts from volcanoes is a part of this layer. |
| Outer Core | Located below the mantle and is made of liquid iron and nickel. The flowing movement of these metals causes Earth’s magnetic field. |
| Inner Core | The center of the planet, made of solid iron and nickel that is under intense pressure. |
| Lithosphere | rigid and brittle outermost layer, contains the crust and top part of the mantle |
| Asthenosphere | flexible layer, flows over time, located in the upper and middle mantle. |
| Mesosphere | more rigid than the asthenosphere, flows more slowly, located in the lower mantle |
| Tectonic Plates | giant, rocky puzzle pieces that make up Earth's outer shell, constantly moving slowly over a softer layer beneath, causing earthquakes, volcanoes, and forming mountains as they bump, slide, or pull apart, carrying continents and ocean floors with them |
