Genetics Vocabulary
Simplified Terms for our use for Genetics
| Term | Definition |

| Gene | The factor that controls a trait you exhibit.. |
| Recessive | The trait that hides in the background. Can only be expressed in homozygous form (EX: aa, dd, kk, zz). |
| Alleles (uhleelz) | The letters that represent a different form of a gene. (EX: D=dimples present; d=absent). |
| Heterozygous/hybird | Two alleles/letters for one trait that are different. (EX: D; d). |
| Ribosome | Makes proteins using directions from DNA. |
| Chromosones | Contains your genes. |
| Meiosis | Produces four sex cells, sperm or egg, that are used to pass a parent's traits to offspring. |
| Heredity | The passing of physical characterstics from parents to offspring. |
| Genotype | A combination of alleles. (EX: DD, Dd, dd) |
| Trait | The different forms of a characteristic. (EX: Dimples present or dimples absent.) |
| Phenotype | The phyiscal appearance of a trait. (EX: dimples or no dimples). |
| Mitosis | Cell reproduction~when one body cell becomes two. |
| Genetics | The scientific study of heredity. |
| Dominant | The trait that overshadows and is expressed. (EX: capital letter: D) |
| Nucleus | Contains DNA and controls cell activiities. |
| Homozygous/purebed | Two alleles/letters for one thar that are the same. (EX: DD or dd). |
| Proteins | The building blocks of cells that control your specific characteritiscs. |
