| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Energy | The ability to cause change or to do work |
| Solar Radiation | Rays of electromagnetic energy that constantly beam down on Earth from the Sun and is Earth's major form of energy |
| Infrared | A wave on the electromagnetic spectrum that humans cannot see. It is slightly longer than the visible wave |
| Ultraviolet | A light wave that is invisible to the human eye, but we can feel its effect as sunburn |
| Visible Light | All the light that we can see with our eyes, visible light |
| Earth's Energy Budget | The total amount of light we get from the Sun and how much gets absorbed by the Earth and reflected back into space |
| Convection | The transfer of heat when warm molecules rise in water or air and cold molecules sink, making a cycle or current |
| Conduction | The transfer of heat from one object or molecule to another by direct contact |
| Radiation | The transfer of radiant energy from one object to another in the form of electromagnetic waves |
| Kinetic Energy | Energy of motion |
| Potential Energy | Energy that is stored |
| Mechanical Energy | The energy of motion or position that has both kinetic and potential energy |
| Electrical Energy | A form of energy made my electrons that make light energy |
| Fossil Fuels | Nonrenewable energy sources that took millions of years to form, like oil, coal, and gas |
| Thermal Energy | The energy of heat through contact |
| Greenhouse Effect | The warming of the Earth's surface where the heat gets trapped in the atmosphere and heats up the Earth's surface |
| Conductor | An object that absorbs heat |
| Insulator | An object that does not easily absorb heat |
