The condition of Earth's atmosphere at a particular time and place. Weather
The layer of gases that surrounds the planet and makes conditons possible to support living things. Atmosphere
light energy from the sun that can be damaging to living things without the protection of the atmosphere radiation
The most abundant gas in the atmosphere (78%). Makes up proteins in living things but must be taken in as nitrates from the soil. Nitrogen
Second most abundant gas in atmosphere (21%). Plants and animals use this to release energy from food. Also required for burning reactions. Oxygen
The three atom form of oxygen that forms when lightning strikes and is found in upper levels of atmosphere too. ozone
A gas that makes up less than 1% of the atmosphere but is an essential for plants to produce food. Released into the atmosphere by animals as a waste product and by the burning of fossil fuels. Carbon dioxide
gaseous form of water which varies from place to place in the atmosphere. Plays important role in precipitation of weather. water vapor
Caused by the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, gasoline and diesel fuel. air pollution
Harmful substances in the air, water or soil. pollutants
Tiny substances in the air that come from natural and human sources like salt, dust, pollen, ashes and poisonous gases. particles
A brown haze that forms in cities from a reaction of the sun with chemical pollutants in the air. photochemical smog
Precipitation in the air that forms when nitrogen and sulfur oxides combine with the water in the air to form nitric and sulfuric acids. Acid rain
The majority of pollution comes from burning these energy sources. Fossil fuels
The amount of mass in the volume that an object occupies. density
The force applied to a certain area. pressure
The weight of the column of air that pushes down on a surface area of the earth. Air pressure
The distance above sea level. Also known as elevation. altitude
An instrument used to measure air pressure that consists of a glass tube open at the bottom and partially filled with mercury. Mercury barometer
An instrument used to measure air pressure that does not use a liquid but has an air tight metal chamber which is sensitive to changes in the pressure of the air. Aneroid barometer
