Digestive System

What is the digestive system? A group of organs that work together to break down food into energy and nutrients your body needs to grow and stay healthy.
Where does digestion begin? In your mouth, when you chew food and saliva mixes with it.
What do your teeth do in digestion? They break food into smaller pieces, making it easier to swallow.
What is saliva and what does it do? Saliva is spit that mixes with food and begins breaking it down chemically.
What is the esophagus? A tube that connects your mouth to your stomach and pushes food downward using muscle contractions.
What is peristalsis? The wave-like movement of muscles in the esophagus that pushes food downward automatically.
What happens in the stomach? The stomach stores and mixes food using strong acids and juices for 1 to 3 hours, creating a soupy mixture called chyme.
What is chyme? A soupy mixture of food and stomach juices that moves from the stomach into the small intestine.
How long is the small intestine? About 20 feet long.
What are villi? Tiny finger-like structures in the small intestine that absorb nutrients from food into your bloodstream.
What is the main job of the small intestine? To absorb nutrients from food into your bloodstream so your body can use them for energy, growth, and repair.
What does the pancreas do? It makes digestive juices that help break down food in the small intestine.
What does the liver do? It makes bile, a liquid that helps digest fats.
What does the gallbladder do? It stores bile and releases it when needed to help digest fats.
What is the large intestine also called? The colon.
What is the main job of the large intestine? To absorb water from waste and absorb some remaining nutrients and minerals.
How is the large intestine different from the small intestine? The large intestine is shorter and wider than the small intestine.
What is the rectum? The part of the digestive system where solid waste (poop) collects before leaving the body.
How long does the entire digestive journey take? About 24 to 72 hours from the time you eat food until it leaves your body.
How long does food stay in your stomach? 1 to 3 hours of mixing.
How long does food stay in your small intestine? 3 to 5 hours of nutrient absorption.
How long does food stay in your large intestine? 24 to 72 hours of water absorption.
