bio Unit 8 vocab

DNA replication, protein synthesis, mutations, etc.

TermDefinition
deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) genetic material that organisms inherit from their parents
thymine a compound which Is one of the four crucial bases of nucleic acids; a pyrimidine derivative, it is paired with adenine in a double-stranded DNA
helicase an enzyme that brings about the separation of DNA or RNA strands to enable replication and other processes; breaks hydrogen bonds between base pairs, using energy from ATP
double helix a pair of parallel helices intertwined about a common axis, especially that in the structure of the DNA molecule; used for storing and replicating genetic information
cytosine a compound found in living tissue as a constituent base of nucleic acids; paired with guanine in a double-stranded DNA
base pairing principle that bonds in DNA can form only between adenine and thymine and between guanine and cytosine
transformation process in which one strain of bacteria is changed by a gene or genes from another strain of bacteria
guanine a compound that occurs in guano and fish scales, and is one of the four crucial bases of nucleic acids; paired with cytosine in double-stranded DNA
semi-conservative relating to or denoting replication of a nucleic acid in which one complete strand of each double helix is directly derived from the parent molecule
bacteriophage kind of virus that infects bacteria
adenine a compound which is one of the four crucial bases of nucleic acids; paired with thymine in double-stranded DNA
replication process of copying DNA prior to cell division
antiparallel two strands (like DNA's double helix) that run alongside each other but in opposite directions
DNA polymerase principal enzyme involved in DNA replication

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
