Biochemistry Biochemistry is the study of molecules and chemical reactions that occur in living things
Element An element is a substance that cannot be broken down into simpler/smaller substances
Atom An atom is the smallest unit of an element
Molecule A molecule is the smallest unit of any compound
Compound Compounds are formed when 2 or more elements chemically combine
Subscripts Subscripts are the little number after the element that tells how many atoms there are
Coefficient Coefficients are the number in front of a molecular formula that tells how many molecules are there
Balanced Equation A balanced equation is a chemical equation that has the same number of atoms on both sides of the equal sign
Raw Materials Raw Materials are molecules needed to start a chemical reaction They are also called reactants
End Products End Products are what are made by a chemical reaction
Photosynthesis Photosynthesis is the process by which plants and certain other organisms make their own food. Light energy is used to start this process. Raw materials are reorganized to make simple sugar the plant can use for food.
Cellular respiration Cellular Respiration is the process by which cells release energy from food - glucose - and changes it to usable form
Glucose Glucose is the simple sugar that is made by plants and certain other organisms. Glucose can be used right away or stored in the organism for future use.
