Review for Semester 1 exam

TermDefinition
Science The investigation of natural phenomena to develop evidence-based explanations and predictions.
Plates Pieces of the crust that move around due to convection currents in the mantle.
Crust The outermost layer of the compositional layers.
Lithosphere The physical layer that contains the very top of the mantle and the plates.
Asthenosphere The thick, malleable magma the plates float on.
Mantle The layer that has convection currents that cause the plates to move. Made mostly of magnesium and silica.
Outer Core The Earth's only liquid layer. Composed of mainly iron and nickel.
Inner Core The Earth's innermost and hottest layer. Made of mainly iron and nickel.
Subduction When a denser, thinner plate slides under a thicker, less dense plate.
Volcano A landform that spews pressurized magma out.
Rift Valleys Valleys formed from diverging of two plates.
