| igneous rock | a rock formed deep below the Earth's surface |
| metamorphic rock | a rock that was once igneous or sedimentary and changed after being exposed to heat and pressure |
| sedimentary rock | a rock that forms when small bits of materials are pressed together in layers |
| deposition | the dropping off of eroded soil, sand, and bits of rock |
| erosion | the process of wind or water moving small pieces of rock |
| weathering | slow process that breaks materials into smaller pieces |
| coal | a black or brown rock that is found in the earth and burned as fuel |
| natural gas | a mixture of gases found below Earth's surface that is used as fuel |
| natural resource | something that people use from nature |
| nonrenewable | cannot be replaced by nature easily or quickly |
| oil | a liquid that is formed beneath Earth's surface that is used to form fuels and to make a variety of other products |
| renewable | can be replaced by nature easily or quickly |
| limestone | a sedimentary rock formed mostly from shells and other animal remains |
