Unit 4.1 Biodiversit

Biodiversity

QuestionAnswer
Age Structure The distribution of various age groups within a population. Often reported using a pyramid diagram.
Arable land Land that is suitable for growing crops.
Biodiversity All the variety of life found in the world, or in a particular habitat or ecosystem at any given time.
Biodiversity Treaty An international treaty (agreement) deigned to (1) promote conservation of Earth's biodiversity, and (2) to ensure the sustainable use, and equitable sharing of genetic resources.
Captive Breeding The practice of capturing members of threatened and endangered species so that their young can be bred and raised in controlled environments and reintroduced into the wild.
Carrying Capacity Largest number of individuals in a population that a environment can support.
Competition The struggle between organisms to survive in a habitat that has limited resources.
Conservation Protecting and preserving natural resources and the environment.
Demographic Transition The changing pattern of mortality, fertility, and growth rates as societies cycle between demographic dominance.
Demography The scientific study of population characteristics and dynamics.
Dispersion The pattern of spacing among individuals within the boundaries of the population.
Ecotourism A form of tourism, based on the enjoyment of scenic areas or natural wonders, which aims to provide a natural or cultural experience in environmentally sustainable ways.
Endangered Species A species whose numbers are so small that the species is at risk of extinction.
Endangered Species Act (1973) A law requiring the federal government to protect all species listed as endangered.
Endemic Species A species that is found in only one area. Such species are especially vulnerable to extinction.
Exotic Species A species that is not native to a particular region.
Exponential Growth Population growth that is continuous because of the abundance of resources for an ever
Extinct A species that no longer has any known living individuals.
Fertility Rate The average number of children born to a woman in a given population during her lifetime.
Gene A segment of DNA on a chromosome that codes for a specific trait.
Growth Rate Rate of increase or decrease in a population.
Habitat Conservation Plan A plan that attempts to protect one or more species across large areas of land through trade
Infrastructure Fundamental facilities and systems serving a country, city, or area, such as transportation, communication systems, power plants, and schools etc.
Keystone Species A species on which other species in an ecosystem largely depend, such that if it were removed the ecosystem would change drastically.
Life Expectancy The average number of years an individual can be expected to live, given current social, economic, and medical conditions. Life expectancy at birth is the average number of years a newborn infant can expect to live.
Migration The movement of organisms from one place to another caused any number of reasons.
Niche An organism's particular role in an ecosystem, or how it makes its living (its' job).
Poaching The Illegal killing or removal of wildlife from their habitats.
Population Density A measurement of the number of organisms per given area of land.
Predation An interaction in which one organism captures and feeds on another organism.
Preservation To maintain of areas of land or water in their present condition, with as little human impact as possible.
Reproductive Potential The maximum number of offspring that each member of the population can produce over time.
Survivorship The percentage of newborn individuals in a population that can be expected to survive to a given age.
Threatened Species A species that could become endangered in the near future.
Urbanization An increase in the percentage and in the number of people living in urban settlements.
Least Developed Country A United Nations list of countries that exhibit the lowest socioeconomic development and human development rate out of all countries in the world.
