Cells

Lesson 2

TermDefinition
Cell wall Rigid layer of nonliving material that surrounds the cells of plants and some other organisms
Cell membrane A cell structure that controls which substances can enter or leave the cell
Nucleus In cells, a large organelle that contains the cells genetic material in the form of DNA and controls many of the cells activities.
Organelle A tiny cell structure that carries out a specific function within the cell
Ribosome A small grain-shaped organelle in the cytoplasm of a cell that produces proteins
Cytoplasm The thick fluid region of a cell located inside the cell membrane (in prokaryotes) or between the cell membrane and nucleus (in eukaryotes)
Mitochondria Rod-shaped cell structures that covert energy in food molecules to energy the cell can use to carry out its functions.
Endoplasmic reticulum A cell structure that forms a maze of passageways in which proteins and other materials are carried from one part of the cell to another
Golgi apparatus like a cell's post office, which modifies, sorts, and packages proteins and lipids into small containers called vesicles for delivery to specific destinations inside or outside the cell.
Vacuole A sac-like organelle that stores water, food, and other materials.
Lysosome A small, round cell structure containing chemicals that breakdown large food particles into smaller ones
Multicellular consisting of many cells.
Unicellular Made of a single cell.
Tissue A group of similar cells that perform a specific function
Organ A body structure that is composed of different kinds of tissues that work together.
Organ system a group of organs that work together in the body to perform a complex function
Specialized cells a cell that has developed a unique structure to perform a specific function in the body
List what is inside the nucleus The cells genetic material (DNA organized as chromatin and chromosomes)
Describe the difference between animal and plant cell structures Plants have bigger vacuole, chloroplasts, cell wall.
Describe what the endoplasmic reticulum does for ribosomes The endoplasmic reticulum guides the proteins lake a maze of passageways.
where ribosomes are made and why they are important Ribosomes are made in the nucleolus, and they produce proteins for the cell.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
