Atmosphere & Wind

QuestionAnswer
This is the HORIZONTAL movement of air from an area of high pressure to an area of lower pressure WIND
Winds are caused by changes in ......? air pressure
What causes the most differences in air pressure the UNEQUAL heating of the atmospher
Winds are described by these two things? SPEED and DIRECTION
This instrument determines the direction of wind? WIND VANE
When naming the wind you tell where the wind is .....? Coming From (a South wind is coming/ blowing from the south and heading north)
This measures wind speed? anemometer
What is wind chill factor? The increased cooling that a Wind causes is called Wind Chill. It is often described as the cooling you feel when Wind blows over your skin.
Descibe characteristics of Low Pressure ~air is lighter and rises ~air moves counter clockwise ~weather : clouds, breezy, precipitation
Describe characteristics of High Pressure ~air heavier and rises ~winds move away ~air moves clockwise ~weather: clear and quiet
A local wind that blows from an ocean or lake Sea Breeze / Lake Breeze
When a sea breeze / lake breeze is occurring, what happens? warmer air from the land rises and the colder air from the sea / lake moves to take its place
When does a SEA Breeze occur? DAY
When does a LAND Breeze occur? NIGHT
What happens when a LAND Breeze occurs? The now warmer air of sea/lake rises and the now colder air moves off the land to take its place
The thin envelope of glasses surrounding our plant is known as the atmosphere
Earth's atmosphere includes air, water and energy all connected within a system.
The entire atmosphere is important because...? ~protects us from meteors & harmful UV rays ~ provides gases essential for life: O2 ~Allows water to circulate through the water cycle ~keeps the Earth's temperature stable enough for life PPOWW!!!
Composition of Atmosphere Gases? 78% Nitrogen 21% Oxygen 1% other gases 0-4% water vapor continually cycled into the atmospher
Measure of water in the air? Humity
What other "things" can be found in atmosphere? dust, ash, germs, and chemicals
The column of air exerting a force on you is called ? Air Pressure
What instrument is used to measure air pressure? barometer
What is the height above sea level known as? altitude
As altitude increases.....? Air pressure decreases
This is the lowest layer of the atmosphere and the one we live on. It is where the weather occurs, 12 km thick, thinnest but most dense layer. 80% of the air Troposphere
This layer is the 2nd layer of the atmosphere, contains the ozone layer and absorbs energy from sun realizing heat. protects life on earth and protects us from UV light. 50 km Stratosphere
Coldest layer of the atmosphere that protects earth's surface from breaking/burning meteors, space debiris , etc.) 80 Km Mesosphere
This is considered outer space. Includes the Exosphere where space shuttles and satellites orbit and the Ionosphere where auroras occur. Thermosphere
