What is a ligand-gated ion channel? A membrane protein that opens when a chemical messenger (ligand) binds to it, allowing ions to enter or exit the cell.
What is an action potential? A rapid change in membrane voltage that travels along a neuron, allowing nerve communication.
Which ion primarily rushes INTO the neuron during depolarization? Sodium (Na⁺).
What does the CNS include? The brain and spinal cord.
What does the autonomic nervous system (ANS) control? Involuntary functions like heart rate, breathing, and digestion.
Sympathetic vs. parasympathetic nervous system — main difference? Sympathetic = “fight or flight.” Parasympathetic = “rest and digest.”
What is a hormone? A chemical messenger released by endocrine glands that travels through the bloodstream.
Which gland is called the “master gland”? The pituitary gland.
What type of receptors detect taste and smell? Chemoreceptors.
What is the function of the heart? To pump blood throughout the body, delivering oxygen and nutrients.
What is the purpose of the lymphatic system? Returning fluid to the bloodstream and aiding immune function.
What is the main function of the respiratory system? Gas exchange — bringing in oxygen and removing carbon dioxide.
What is the main function of the digestive system? Breaking down food and absorbing nutrients.
