coal A solid energy resource that forms from ancient PLANTS over millions of years.
decomposition The breaking down of plant and animal remains by decomposers.
fossil fuel A source of energy that started forming millions of years ago from the remains of plants and microorganisms.
natural gas A gaseous energy resource that forms from microorganisms over million of years.,
nonrenewable resources A resource that cannot be replenished or replaced quickly or easily.
oil A liquid energy resource that forms from microorganisms over millions of years.
petroleum A name given to crude oil and refined oil.
sediment Small pieces of weathered rock.
weathering The breaking down of larger rocks into smaller pieces called sediment.
erosion The movement of sediment from one place to another by wind, water, and ice.
deposition The dropping of sediment in a new location by wind, water, or ice.
cementation The process of minerals hardening around sediment.
compaction The squeezing together of rock layers due to pressure.
sedimentary rock A type of rock formed from layers of sediment that is compacted and cemented over time.
