chemical energy Energy that is stored in a material
conclusion a statement about what the results of an experiment mean
chlorophyll a green coloring in plants that absorbs, or takes in, the energy of sunlight
nutrient a substance that a living things needs to live and grow
photosynthesis the process by which plants, algae, and some bacteria use energy from sunlight to make their own food
producer a plant or other organism that makes its own food
adaptation a body part or behavior that helps an organism meet its needs and survive in its environment
carnivore a consumer that only eats other animals
consumer an organism that obtains its food by eatings other organisms
herbivore an organism that eats only plants and plant products
omnivore a consumer that eats both plants and animals
bacteria microscopic organisms found in all ecosystems. Some are decomposers
fungi a group of organisms that includes mushrooms and molds
bristle a short, stiff hair or a structure like a hair
decomposer an organism that breaks down the dead bodies and wastes of other living things
ecosystem all of the living and nonliving things in an area
microscopic too small to be seen without the aid of a microscope
food chain a series of organisms in which each organism is food for the next one in the series
energy the ability to make things move or change
experiment a carefully controlled test of a scientific idea
organism a living things, such as a plant or an animal
thermal energy the energy of the moving particles that make up matter
variable anything that can change, or vary, in an experiment
camouflage a coloring, pattern, or shape that helps an animal blend in with its surroundings
pellet a little ball of undigested material, such as bones and fur, that a bird of prey coughs up
predator an animal that hunts and eats other animals
prey an animal that is hunted and eaten by other animals
energy pyramid a model that shows the amount of energy available at each feeding level in an ecosystem
food web a system of food chains that connect with each other. A food web may include all the interconnected food chains in an ecosystem
invasive species a non-native species that is introduced into an ecosystem and causes harm
native species a species that is naturally found in an ecosystem
symbiosis when two different kinds of living things, like animals, plants, or fungi, live and work together for a long time, often helping each other survive
