| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| sedimentation | process of sediment settling or being deposited |
| encounters | to come upon or meet |
| sedimentary rock | rocks formed when small particles of rock or the remains of plants and animals are pressed & cemented together over time |
| deformation | the process in which intense heat & pressure causes rocks to change in form and shape |
| mineral | a type of rock with a crystal structure & definite chemical composition |
| metamorphic rock | rock made from different types of rock formed from intense heat & pressure, usually deep underground |
| intrusive igneous rock | forms under Earth’s surface as magma cools; contains larger crystals |
| extrusive igneous rock | forms on Earth’s surface from lava |
| crystallization | the process of molten rock cooling & hardening, creating repeated shapes |
| igneous rock | rocks that form when magma or lava cools & hardens |
| crust | coolest layer of Earth, most rigid, thinnest layer |
| temperature and pressure | increases as you move from the outermost layers of the Earth to the innermost |
| mantle | Earth’s thickest layer, where convection occurs, upper part of this layer is solid, broken rock, then one that flows, lower part is more rigid than the rock above it |
| magma | molten material inside the Earth |
| outer core | only full liquid layer of Earth. It is composed of iron and nickel and molten material |
| inner core | dense sphere of solid metal found in the center of Earth, hottest layer of Earth, spins slightly faster than the rest of the planet |
| lava | molten material outside the Earth |
| principle | an accepted and proven truth that other conclusions may be based on |
| mechanical weathering | the type of weathering in which rock is physically broken into smaller pieces |
| chemical weathering | the process that breaks down rock through chemical changes |
| deposition | the process in which sediment is laid down in new locations |
| landslide | the rapid mass movement of soil and rock down a slope |
| agent | something that has an effect or causes a change |
