Green cells book

chapter 1 lesson 2

TermDefinition
Cell wall A ridged layer of non living material that surrounds the cells of plants and some other organisms
Cell membrane A cell structure that controls which substances can enter or leave the cell
Nucleus A cell structure that contains nuclear acids the chemical structures that direct all the cells activities
organelle A unit in a cell that has its own function
ribosome A grain shaped organelle in a cell that produces proteins
cytoplasm The thick fluid in a cell, located inside the cell membrane to hold up organelles
mitochondria This is where cellular respiration occurs, generating the cell's main energy molecule, ATP.
Endoplasmic reticulum A network of membranes that forms sacs and tubules.
Golgi apparatus A stack of flattened, membrane-bound sacs (cisternae) that modifies, sorts, and packages proteins and lipids into vesicles for transport to other parts of the cell or outside the cell.
vacuole a sac like organelle that stores food, water, and other materials
lysosome a membrane bound sac that helps store water, nutrients, and waste
multicellular consisting of many cells
unicellular consisting of one cell
tissue a group of similar cells that perform a specific function
organ a body structure that is composed of different kinds of tissues that work together
organ system a group of organs that work together to perform a major, interconnected life function
specialized cells cells in multicellular organisms that are different to have unique structures and functions, allowing them to perform a specific role efficiently
division of labor in multicellular organisms, the way that essential life functions are divided among different cells, tissues, and organs, increasing the organism's overall efficiency and complexity
What is inside the nucleus chromatin, the nucleolus, and nucleoplasm
The difference between animal and plant cell structures a plant cell has a rigid, cell wall and an animal cell does not
What does the Endoplasmic reticulum does for ribosomes the ER provides a location for protein synthesis and processing
Where ribosomes are made and why they are important ribosomes are made in the nucleolus and are important for protein synthesis

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
