5.6 Light
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Light | A form of energy that we can see; it travels from sources (like the Sun or a lamp) and makes things visible. |
| Visible Light | The part of light that human eyes can detect; it includes all the colors we see. |
| Transverse Wave | A wave in which the motion of the medium is at right angles to the direction the wave travels (like ripples on a string); light travels as a transverse wave. |
| Visible Light | The range of colors that make up visible light (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet) when white light is split. |
| White Light | Light made of all the colors in the visible spectrum combined; when it passes through a prism it separates into different colors. |
| Transparent | A material that lets most light pass through so you can clearly see objects on the other side (like clear glass). |
| Translucent | A material that lets some light pass but scatters it, so you can’t see clear images through it (like frosted glass or wax paper). |
| Opaque | A material that does not let light pass through; it blocks light so you cannot see through it (like wood or metal). |
| Reflection | When light bounces off a surface (like a mirror) and changes direction, sending an image or light back. |
| Refraction | The bending of light when it passes from one material into another (like from air into water), which can change how objects look. |
