Microorganism Living things to small to see without a microscope
Cell The basic unit of structure and function in living things (Building Blocks of Life)
Nucleus controls all cell activity (Brain of the cell)
Cell Membrane surrounds the cell and controls what enters and leaves (Gatekeeper)
Cytoplasm jelly-like substance that fills cell where organelles, other parts, float within
Cell Wall The stiff structure surrounding the cell membrane in plants which gives the cell shape and support for the plant
Chloroplast Found in plant cells, contains the green substance chlorophyll for making food
Mitochondria Breaks down materials to make energy for the cell
Vacuole Storage spaces within the cytoplasm for needed materials or waste
Simple Animal Many cells but few body parts
Complex Animal Many cells and many body parts
Vertebrate Animals with a backbone (3% of all animals)
Invertebrate Animals without a backbone (97% of all animals)
Arthropod Largest group of invertebrates who have jointed legs and an external skeleton
