Inheritance

Genetics and Molecualr Biology

QuestionAnswer
What is Mendalian Inheritance? Genes passed down through a single trait. Can be passed to any offspring. Both Mother and Father can pass on the trait.
What are Recessive genes? Genes that can only be passed on through homozygous chromosomes.
What are Dominant genes? Genes that can be passed down through both hetrozyhous and homozygous chromosomes.
What is Penetrance? The chance that an allele will result in phenotypical expression.
What is Expressivity? The severity of the phenotypical expression.
What are Homozygous chromosomes? A pair of identical chromosomes. - Two identical alles.
What are the Loci for Homozygous chromosomes? Loci 1 - AA/aa Loci 2 - BB/bb
What are Hetrozygous chromosomes? Two different chromsomes. - Two different alleles.
What are the Loci for Hetrozygous chromosomes? Loci 1 - Aa/aA Loci 2 - Bb/bB
What is X-Linked inheritance? Inheritence that occures through the X chromosome. 50/50 chance that a female parent will pass the mutation to offspirng. 100% chance that male parent will pass the mutation onto female offspring.
How are female offspring affected? Mosty asymptomatic. Become carriers of the mutation
How are male offspring affected? Always be symptomatic.
What is Complex Inheritance? Inheritance that is affected by multiple genes and enviromental factors.
What is the rate of single gene disorders? 20/1000 people.
What is the rate of disorders with multifactoral inheritance? 600/1000 people.
What is the rate of disorders with genome/chromosome mutations? 3.8/1000 people.
What is reletive risk ratio? The comparison of frequency in disease within a family compared to the general population.
What is Familial correlation? The physiological measurement (inheritance) is more frequent in families than the population.
What is mitchocondrial Inheritance? Genetic conditions which are passed down through the mitchocondria. This inheritance only occurs through the mother.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
