QuestionAnswer
Element a basic component of a whole, a fundamental substance in chemistry composed of a single type of atom, or a specific software application like the Matrix-based messaging client or a UI toolkit for web development
compounds a thing that is composed of two or more separate elements; a mixture
mixtures a physical combination of two or more substances that are not chemically bonded
molecules a group of atoms bonded together, representing the smallest fundamental unit of a chemical compound that can take part in a chemical reaction
atom the basic building block of matter, consisting of a central nucleus made of positively charged protons and neutral neutrons, surrounded by a cloud of negatively charged electrons
protons a stable subatomic particle occurring in all atomic nuclei, with a positive electric charge equal in magnitude to that of an electron, but of opposite sign
neutron a subatomic particle of about the same mass as a proton but without an electric charge, present in all atomic nuclei except those of ordinary hydrogen
electron a subatomic particle with a negative electric charge found in all atoms
Lewis Dot Structure a diagram that uses the chemical symbols of elements and dots to show the valence electrons and bonding in a molecule
Chemical symbol a one- or two-letter abbreviation used to represent a chemical element on the periodic table
Atomic number the number of protons in an atom's nucleus, and it uniquely identifies a chemical element
period a horizontal row on the periodic table
Group or family a vertical column of elements on the periodic table, or a non-capturing group in regular expressions used to prevent backtracking
noble gasses a group of chemical elements that are nonreactive due to their full electron shells
halogens any of the elements fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, and astatine, occupying group VIIA (17) of the periodic table. They are reactive nonmetallic elements that form strongly acidic compounds with hydrogen from which simple salts can be made
Alkali metals a group of highly reactive elements in Group 1 of the periodic table
ions an atom or molecule with a net electrical charge, created when it gains or loses one or more electrons
ionic bonds a type of chemical bond formed by the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions
Convalent bonds a chemical bond formed by the sharing of one or more pairs of electrons between two atoms

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
