water cycle a continuous cycle of water on Earth that changes from one state of matter to another as it moves between Earth and the atmosphere
evaporation the heating up of liquid water into water vapor - water changing from a liquid to a gas
condensation the cooling of water vapor back into a liquid - water changing from a gas to a liquid (clouds forming)
precipitation rain, snow, sleet, or hail - any form of water, solid or liquid, that falls from the clouds
accumulation the collection of water on Earth
Sun the main source of energy
runoff when water flows downhill on land's surface and does not soak into the ground.
aquifer an underground layer of rock, sand, or gravel that holds groundwater
