biotic all the living factors within an ecosystem (includes once living items as well)
abiotic all the nonliving factors within an ecosystem
biosphere the layer of the earth where all life exists
atmosphere layer of gases that surround the earth
hydrosphere all the water on and under the earth's surface or in the atmosphere
lithosphere rigid outer part of the earth (crust and mantle)
species a group of organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring
ecosystem all the biotic and abiotic factors within an area
community all the biotic factors within an area (all the species)
population all the individuals of a particular species living at the same time in a particular area (they share a gene pool)
primary producers autotrophs
photosynthesis process by which producers use solar energy to build glucose molecules
chemosynthesis process by which producers use chemical energy in the environment to build glucose molecules
primary consumers heterotrophs
herbivore eats plants
carnivore eats meat
omnivore eats plants and meat
scavengers consumes dead organisms
detritivores consumes dead organisms (especially plants)
decomposers breaks down dead organisms and returns nutrients to soil
law of conservation of matter matter cannot be created or destroyes
biosphere cycles get nutrients to build macromolecules
